The word “Dramatic” has to apply

Beautiful words spoken by photographer Gary Winogrand and I couldn’t agree more with his statement. All the quotes you read here come from the YouTube video I posted below.

What struck me about Garry Winogrand is his relaxed demeanor and the way he doesn’t take himself too seriously. His friend starts the seminar with the words “Welcome to the Winogrand Circus.”

Here are a few quotes from the video, that I liked:

“Photographic technique is simple. It really is. It’s a very forgiving process. You can make a lot of errors and still wind up with a printable negative. I really don’t think you really learn from teachers. You learn from work.”

“I don’t get to know people when I’m photographing. The last time I got to know anybody I got my knee busted!”

About his work he says:

“I don’t deal with these things like they are masterpieces! It’s not all that serious."

At that moment in the video you hear a photograph falling from the wall in the background, Winogrand laughs and says:

“You see that! Another masterpiece bites the dust!”

Love this man.

Below is the YouTube video of Winogrand giving his seminar in 1977 at Rice University, Houston, Texas.
