An evening at the Fair

My son Liam and I decided to go to the fair in our home town to take some pictures. I have the luxury that I can choose between three different (digital) cameras. They all are very capable of shooting street but there’s only one that stands out and is made for this job: The Ricoh GRIII. It took me a while before I could decide which camera to take. I had just bought the Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 for my good “old” X-T2. It is such a great lens but I thought it would maybe be a bit too long for this purpose. Liam, who also owns this lens, did take it to photograph the fair and he got some great results with it.

So much stories in one shot. Love it. For more photos of the fair, shot by Liam, check out his instagram gallery @wolf_liam

I shot mostly “from the hip” (snap focus with DOF priority) with the Ricoh GRIII to try and catch the moments as they appeared without people noticing the camera. It worked pretty well although it always feels a little sneaky to me. I feel more at ease while obviously taking pictures and looking through the viewfinder.

The photo below is one of the few photos I took while clearly pointing the camera. This lady was petting a small dog in the booth of one of the attractions. We had a brief chat and she told me this was the best attraction at the fair. 😁

Here are some more shots of the fair taken with the GRIII.
